About Amaryl
Overview
Amaryl contains glimepiride, a sulfonylurea medicine. It is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It works mainly by helping the pancreas release insulin, which lowers blood sugar. It is not for treating type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), headache, nausea and dizziness. Serious side effects that warrant prompt medical attention include: - Severe low blood sugar. Older adults, people with kidney impairment and those taking other diabetes medicines may be at greater risk. - Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, angioedema (swelling) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a serious skin reaction. Stop taking glimepiride and seek urgent medical attention if an allergic reaction is suspected. - Hemolytic anemia, where red blood cells are destroyed, which can occur in people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. The label also warns of a possible increased risk of death from cardiovascular causes with sulfonylureas, the medicine class that includes glimepiride. Discuss this risk and treatment alternatives with your doctor.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Amaryl (glimepiride) if you have had an allergic reaction to glimepiride, any tablet ingredient or a sulfonamide derivative. Glimepiride can cause severe low blood sugar. Close monitoring is especially important in older adults, people with kidney impairment and those taking other diabetes medicines. It is not recommended for children because of effects on body weight and the risk of low blood sugar. People with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency may develop hemolytic anemia, a condition in which red blood cells break down. The prescriber should consider an alternative that is not a sulfonylurea. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, angioedema and Stevens–Johnson syndrome, have been reported. If an allergic reaction is suspected, stop taking glimepiride and seek medical care promptly. Sulfonylureas carry a warning about a possible increased risk of death from cardiovascular causes. Discuss the risks, benefits and alternatives with your prescriber. Glimepiride has not been conclusively shown to reduce the risk of major blood-vessel complications.
Interactions
Some medicines can affect blood sugar control while taking Amaryl (glimepiride). Tell your doctor about other medicines you take, as closer blood sugar monitoring or a change to your prescription may be needed. Oral miconazole used with glimepiride can cause severe low blood sugar. Medicines that block or increase the activity of the liver enzyme CYP2C9 can change glimepiride levels and affect blood sugar control. Colesevelam can reduce glimepiride absorption. Ask your doctor how to separate these medicines.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
