About Avycaz
Overview
Avycaz is an antibacterial medicine containing ceftazidime and avibactam, given into a vein. It treats complicated abdominal infections (together with metronidazole), complicated urinary tract infections including kidney infections, and hospital-acquired pneumonia, including ventilator-associated pneumonia, caused by susceptible bacteria. Ceftazidime is the antibiotic component, while avibactam blocks enzymes called beta-lactamases.
What it treats
- Complicated infections within the abdomen, used together with metronidazole. - Complicated urinary tract infections, including kidney infections (pyelonephritis). - Hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia, including ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia. For infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacteria in adults and children, including infants of at least 31 weeks gestational age.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects in adults include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting; which are most common varies by the infection being treated. In children aged 3 months to under 18 years, common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, rash and inflammation of a vein at the infusion site. In infants under 3 months, the most common side effects are vomiting and increased liver enzymes. Serious side effects include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and serious skin reactions. Stop Avycaz and seek urgent medical help if an allergic reaction occurs. People with a history of penicillin allergy may also react to Avycaz. Contact a doctor if diarrhea occurs, as it may be associated with Clostridioides difficile and needs assessment. Seizures and other nervous system reactions can occur, especially in people with impaired kidney function; seek urgent medical help if these occur.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Avycaz if you have a known serious allergy to ceftazidime, avibactam, any other product containing avibactam, or any cephalosporin antibiotic. Tell your prescriber if you have a history of penicillin allergy, as cross-allergic reactions may occur. Avycaz can cause anaphylaxis and serious skin reactions. If an allergic reaction occurs, stop treatment and seek medical help. Kidney impairment requires caution. Seizures and other nervous system reactions may occur, especially in people with impaired kidney function. A reduced clinical response was observed in adults with complicated infections inside the abdomen and moderately impaired kidney function. If kidney function is changing, it should be checked at least daily, with treatment adjusted by the prescriber. Diarrhea during treatment needs medical assessment because Avycaz can cause Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea.
