About Azilect
Overview
Azilect is a tablet medicine containing rasagiline, a monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitor. It is used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Its exact mechanism is not fully understood, but it is thought to work by blocking MAO-B, an enzyme that breaks down dopamine, increasing dopamine levels in the brain.

Side effects
Common side effects vary depending on whether Azilect is taken alone or with other medicines. When taken alone, these include flu-like symptoms, joint pain, depression and indigestion. When added to treatment without levodopa, common effects include swelling in the limbs, falls, joint pain, cough and difficulty sleeping. When taken with levodopa, common effects include uncontrolled movements, accidental injury, weight loss, dizziness from a drop in blood pressure on standing, vomiting, loss of appetite, joint pain, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, dry mouth, rash, abnormal dreams, falls and inflammation around tendons. Contact a doctor if you experience serious side effects, including severe high blood pressure, low blood pressure, falling asleep during everyday activities or daytime drowsiness, new or worsening uncontrolled movements, hallucinations or other psychotic-like behaviour, or compulsive urges and behaviours. Serotonin syndrome can occur when Azilect is used with antidepressants. Very high fever and confusion can occur after withdrawal. These reactions warrant urgent medical attention.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Azilect (rasagiline) with meperidine, tramadol, methadone, propoxyphene or any other monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), including selective MAO-B inhibitors, because of the risk of serotonin syndrome. At least 14 days must pass after stopping Azilect before starting any of these medicines. Do not take Azilect with St. John’s wort, cyclobenzaprine or dextromethorphan. Combining it with dextromethorphan can cause psychosis or unusual behaviour. Use with antidepressants may cause serotonin syndrome. Caution is also needed because Azilect may cause high blood pressure, including severe episodes, or low blood pressure, especially on standing. It may cause daytime drowsiness or sudden sleep during daily activities, cause or worsen involuntary movements, and cause hallucinations, psychotic-like behaviour or compulsive urges. Withdrawal may cause a very high fever and confusion. If you are pregnant, discuss treatment with your prescriber. Animal studies suggest that Azilect may harm the unborn baby.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take meperidine, dextromethorphan or any monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. These medicines must not be taken with Azilect. Meperidine increases the risk of serotonin syndrome. Dextromethorphan increases the risk of psychosis or unusual behavior. Other MAO inhibitors can cause a hypertensive crisis, a dangerous rise in blood pressure.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
