About Bactrim , Septra
Overview
Bactrim is an oral antibacterial medicine containing sulphamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is used to treat or prevent infections known or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria susceptible to this combination. When available, laboratory results showing which bacteria are present and which medicines work against them help guide treatment selection.

Safety information
Side effects
The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and allergic skin reactions such as rash or hives. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop a rash or other possible serious side effects. Seek urgent medical help for severe skin reactions, swelling or difficulty breathing. Serious reactions reported include Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, which can cause extensive skin damage, and anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. Rare deaths have occurred with sulfonamides because of severe skin reactions, severe liver damage and serious blood disorders. Other serious reported effects include reduced blood cell counts, anemia, liver inflammation or damage, kidney inflammation or failure, high blood potassium, inflammation of the pancreas or bowel, seizures and inflammation of the membranes around the brain not caused by infection. Muscle breakdown has also been reported, mainly in patients with AIDS. Other reported side effects include abdominal pain, diarrhea, increased sensitivity to sunlight, itching, headache, dizziness, ringing in the ears, joint or muscle pain, cough, weakness, tiredness and difficulty sleeping.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take this medicine if you: • Are allergic to trimethoprim or sulfonamides. • Have previously developed immune thrombocytopenia (a low platelet count caused by an immune reaction) after taking trimethoprim or sulfonamides. • Have confirmed megaloblastic anemia caused by folate deficiency. • Are pregnant or breastfeeding. Sulfonamides cross the placenta and pass into breast milk and may cause kernicterus, a serious form of brain damage in babies. • Have severe liver damage. • Have severe kidney impairment and your kidney function cannot be monitored. This medicine must not be given to infants younger than 2 months.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take any of the following medicines: - Warfarin: Bactrim may prolong blood-clotting time, so clotting tests should be reassessed. - Certain diuretics (water tablets), particularly thiazides: low platelet counts with purple spots or bruising have been reported in older patients taking this combination. - Phenytoin: Bactrim can slow its breakdown and increase its effects. - Methotrexate: Bactrim can increase the amount of unbound methotrexate in the blood. - Cyclosporine: significant but reversible kidney damage has been reported in kidney transplant recipients taking this combination. - Digoxin: blood levels may increase, especially in older patients, and should be monitored. - Indomethacin: this may increase sulphamethoxazole blood levels. - Pyrimethamine used to prevent malaria: a type of anaemia called megaloblastic anaemia has occasionally been reported with this combination. - Tricyclic antidepressants: these may become less effective. - Oral medicines for diabetes: their blood-sugar-lowering effects may increase. - Amantadine: one case of severe confusion (toxic delirium) has been reported with this combination. - ACE inhibitors: high blood potassium has been reported in a few older patients taking this combination.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
