About Bystolic

Overview

Bystolic contains nebivolol, a beta blocker available as tablets. It is used to treat high blood pressure. Its exact blood-pressure-lowering mechanism is not fully established, but it may work partly by slowing the heart rate and relaxing blood vessels.

What it treats

Hypertension (high blood pressure).

Side effects

Common side effects of Bystolic include headache and fatigue. Do not stop Bystolic suddenly, as this can acutely worsen coronary artery disease. Contact your doctor before stopping treatment. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood glucose. Bystolic may mask symptoms of low blood sugar. Contact your doctor if you experience low blood sugar.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Bystolic if you have a severely slow heart rate, heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, decompensated heart failure, sick sinus syndrome without a permanent pacemaker, or severe liver impairment. Do not take it if you are allergic to any ingredient in the medicine. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood glucose, as Bystolic may mask symptoms of low blood sugar. Do not stop taking it abruptly, as this may suddenly worsen coronary artery disease.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take medicines that inhibit the CYP2D6 enzyme, as these may increase nebivolol levels. Reserpine or clonidine may excessively reduce activity in the nerves that help regulate heart function and blood pressure. Digitalis glycosides taken with Bystolic can increase the risk of a slow heart rate. Calcium channel blockers such as verapamil or diltiazem may cause excessive reductions in heart rate, blood pressure and the force of heart contractions.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
