About Ceftin
Overview
Ceftin tablets contain cefuroxime as cefuroxime axetil, a cephalosporin antibiotic. They are used to treat certain bacterial throat, middle ear, sinus, skin and urinary tract infections, bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated gonorrhea and early Lyme disease. Cefuroxime acts against bacteria that are susceptible to it.
What it treats
- Bacterial throat and tonsil infections in adults and children. - Acute bacterial middle ear infections in children. - Acute bacterial maxillary sinus infections in adults and children. - Acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis in adults and children aged 13 years and older. - Uncomplicated skin and related tissue infections in adults and children aged 13 years and older. - Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in adults and children aged 13 years and older. - Uncomplicated gonorrhea in adults and children aged 13 years and older. - Early Lyme disease in adults and children aged 13 years and older. For infections caused by bacteria susceptible to cefuroxime.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, Jarisch–Herxheimer reaction, and vaginitis (vaginal inflammation) in people treated for early Lyme disease. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur. Stop taking Ceftin and seek urgent medical help if you have a serious allergic reaction. Contact your doctor if diarrhea occurs, as it may be associated with Clostridioides difficile and needs evaluation.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Ceftin (cefuroxime) if you have a known allergy to cefuroxime axetil or other beta-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins and cephalosporins. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur. If a serious reaction occurs, stop taking Ceftin and seek urgent medical care. If you develop diarrhea, contact your healthcare professional so they can assess whether it is associated with Clostridioides difficile infection.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take medicines that reduce stomach acidity, as they may reduce how much cefuroxime your body absorbs. Taking probenecid with cefuroxime is not recommended because it increases cefuroxime exposure in the body.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
