About Clomid
Overview
Clomid is a tablet containing clomiphene citrate, a nonsteroidal ovulation stimulant. It is used to treat ovulation problems in women who want to become pregnant, after other barriers to pregnancy have been ruled out or treated. It works by stimulating ovulation, the release of an egg from an ovary.
What it treats
Ovulatory dysfunction (problems with ovulation) in women who wish to become pregnant, including those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include enlarged ovaries, hot flushes, abdominal or pelvic discomfort and bloating, nausea, vomiting, breast discomfort and headache. Spotting between periods or heavy menstrual bleeding can also occur. Less commonly reported effects include dizziness, tiredness, mood changes, difficulty sleeping, rash, bowel changes and vaginal dryness. Contact your doctor if you develop vision changes, including blurred or double vision, flashes, floaters, sensitivity to light or blind spots. Severe abdominal or pelvic pain, increasing abdominal swelling, or unusual or heavy bleeding also warrant medical attention. Ovarian cancer has been reported infrequently in people who have received fertility medicines. Infertility itself is a risk factor, but the label notes that prolonged clomifene use may increase the risk of borderline or invasive ovarian tumours. Discuss this risk with your doctor if treatment is prolonged.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Clomid must not be taken during pregnancy or by anyone allergic to clomifene or any tablet ingredient. It should not be used by people with liver disease or a history of liver problems, unexplained uterine bleeding, or ovarian cysts or enlargement not caused by polycystic ovary syndrome. Other contraindications include uncontrolled thyroid or adrenal disorders and an organic brain lesion, such as a pituitary tumour. Extra caution is needed in people with uterine fibroids or a personal or family history of high blood triglycerides. Breastfeeding should be discussed with the prescriber, as clomifene may reduce milk production. Any existing or previous visual problems should also be discussed. Stop treatment and seek prompt medical advice if blurred vision, flashes, spots or other visual changes occur; these can sometimes persist after treatment ends.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about all medicines, vitamins, herbal products and supplements you take, especially other fertility medicines or hormone treatments. Combining clomifene with medicines that stimulate the ovaries may increase the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation and requires specialist supervision. No specific food interactions are well established.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
