About Coralan, Servier

Overview

Coralan contains ivabradine and is a prescription medicine supplied as tablets. Ivabradine is used to reduce the risk of hospital admission for worsening heart failure in adults with stable, symptomatic chronic heart failure and a reduced left ventricular ejection fraction, meaning the heart’s main pumping chamber pumps out less blood than normal. It works by slowing the activity of the heart’s natural pacemaker, lowering the heart rate without reducing the force of heart muscle contractions.

What it treats

To reduce the risk of hospitalization for worsening heart failure in adults with stable, symptomatic chronic heart failure and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include a slow heart rate, high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm), and visual effects such as seeing flashes of light or bright spots. Contact your doctor if you develop a slow heart rate, an irregular heart rhythm or problems with the heart’s electrical conduction. Your doctor should monitor your heart rate and check for atrial fibrillation during treatment. Ivabradine can harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception if you could become pregnant, and contact your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.

When to call your doctor

• A slow heartbeat. • An irregular heartbeat.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take ivabradine if you have: • Acute worsening of heart failure. • Clinically significant low blood pressure or a slow heart rate. • Sick sinus syndrome, sinoatrial block or third-degree heart block, unless you have a functioning demand pacemaker. • Severe liver impairment. • A heart rate maintained entirely by a pacemaker. • Current treatment with a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor. Ivabradine is not recommended in people with second-degree heart block. During treatment, patients should be monitored for atrial fibrillation, a fall in heart rate and symptoms of an abnormally slow heartbeat. Ivabradine can harm an unborn baby. Women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.

Interactions

Avoid taking ivabradine with medicines that inhibit or induce the enzyme CYP3A4. Ask your doctor to check your other medicines for these interactions. Medicines that also slow the heart rate can increase the risk of an unusually slow heartbeat (bradycardia) when taken with ivabradine. Your heart rate should be monitored if these medicines are used together.
