About Cortrosyn
Overview
Cortrosyn is a diagnostic medicine supplied as a powder in a single-dose vial for preparation as an injection. It is used alongside other tests to screen adults and children for adrenal insufficiency, rather than to treat it. It contains cosyntropin, a synthetic version of part of the body’s adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).
What it treats
Used with other diagnostic tests to screen for adrenal insufficiency in adults and children. It is a diagnostic agent, not a treatment for this condition.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include a slow or fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, swelling in the limbs, and rash. The frequency of these reactions cannot be reliably estimated from the available reports. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have also been reported. Seek immediate medical attention if a serious allergic reaction occurs.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Cortrosyn must not be used by anyone with a history of an allergic reaction to cosyntropin or any of its other ingredients. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported. Patients should be monitored for allergic reactions and treated as needed. Certain medicines and conditions that affect cortisol or cortisol-binding globulin levels can make cortisol test results inaccurate after Cortrosyn is given. This may affect the diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about medicines you take before Cortrosyn testing, especially glucocorticoids, spironolactone and estrogen-containing medicines. Glucocorticoids and spironolactone may falsely raise cortisol levels, affecting test accuracy. The label advises stopping them on the day of testing; long-acting glucocorticoids may need a longer pause. Estrogen-containing medicines may raise total cortisol levels, and the label advises stopping them 4–6 weeks before testing. Ask your doctor how to manage these medicines before the test.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
