Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events from combination oral contraceptive (COC) use. This risk increases with age, particularly in women over 35 years of age, and with the number of cigarettes smoked. For this reason, COCs are contraindicated in women who are over 35 years of age and smoke.
About Cryselle
Overview
Cryselle is a combination oral contraceptive tablet. It is used to prevent pregnancy in females who can become pregnant. It combines two hormones for contraception: norgestrel, a progestin, and ethinyl estradiol, an estrogen.

Prevention of pregnancy in females of reproductive potential.
Safety information
Side effects
Commonly reported side effects include irregular bleeding or spotting, nausea, breast tenderness and headache. Other common effects reported in Cryselle trials include weight gain or loss, acne, painful periods, vaginal discharge, abdominal pain, cramps or bloating, increased appetite, depression, nervousness, tiredness, dark patches on the skin and worsening varicose veins. Contact your healthcare provider if bleeding persists or is prolonged. Serious side effects warrant prompt medical attention. Oral contraceptive use is associated with an increased risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke and liver disease. Serious reactions reported with Cryselle also include inflammation of the pancreas, gallbladder disease, jaundice, severe allergic reactions involving swelling or breathing and circulation problems, and inflammation of the optic nerve that may cause partial or complete vision loss. Liver tumors and cancers of the breasts and reproductive organs have also been reported after marketing. These reports cannot reliably establish how often these effects occur or whether Cryselle caused them. Studies of breast cancer risk have had mixed findings, with some finding increased risk during current or recent use.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Cryselle if you: • Smoke and are over 35. • Have or have previously had a blood clot in a deep vein or the lungs, or have an inherited or acquired blood-clotting disorder. • Have disease affecting the blood vessels in the brain, coronary artery disease, or a heart valve or heart rhythm condition that increases the risk of blood clots. • Have uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes with blood vessel disease. • Have headaches with specific neurological symptoms, migraines with aura, or any migraines if you are over 35. • Have liver disease or a liver tumour, whether cancerous or non-cancerous. • Have unexplained abnormal uterine bleeding. • Are pregnant. • Have breast cancer or a history of breast cancer. • Are allergic to any component of Cryselle. • Take a hepatitis C treatment containing ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir, with or without dasabuvir, because this combination may raise liver enzyme levels. These are reasons not to use Cryselle, rather than conditions requiring caution alone.
Interactions
If you are breastfeeding, discuss other forms of contraception with your doctor until your child is weaned. Cryselle can reduce milk production, even after breastfeeding is well established. Small amounts of contraceptive hormones and their breakdown products are present in breast milk.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
