About Cyanocobalamin
Overview
Cyanocobalamin is a vitamin B12 medicine given by injection into a muscle or under the skin. It treats vitamin B12 deficiency caused by poor absorption, including deficiency associated with pernicious anemia and certain stomach or bowel conditions or surgery. It works by supplying the vitamin B12 that the body is not absorbing adequately.
What it treats
- Vitamin B12 deficiency caused by poor absorption associated with: - Pernicious anemia - Digestive tract disease, dysfunction or surgery, including gluten enteropathy (sprue), small bowel bacterial overgrowth, or partial or total stomach removal - Fish tapeworm infestation - Cancer of the pancreas or bowel - Folic acid deficiency - Also used in the Schilling test to assess vitamin B12 absorption.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include mild, temporary diarrhea, itching, a temporary rash, and a feeling of swelling throughout the body. The label does not state how common these effects are. Serious side effects include fluid buildup in the lungs and congestive heart failure early in treatment, blood clots in peripheral blood vessels, and polycythemia vera (a condition involving too many red blood cells). Contact a doctor promptly if you experience a serious side effect. Anaphylactic shock, a severe allergic reaction, and deaths have been reported after vitamin B12 injections. A severe allergic reaction requires emergency medical attention.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use cyanocobalamin if you are allergic to cobalt or vitamin B12. Conditions requiring particular caution include: • Early Leber’s disease, a hereditary condition affecting the optic nerve: severe, rapid optic nerve damage has occurred after cyanocobalamin treatment. • Severe megaloblastic anemia: intensive treatment may cause low blood potassium and sudden death. • Suspected allergy to cyanocobalamin: a skin test is recommended before treatment. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock and death, have been reported after vitamin B12 injections. • Impaired kidney function: this product contains aluminum, which may build up to toxic levels with prolonged injection treatment and harm the nervous system and bones. • Premature infants: immature kidneys increase the risk of aluminum toxicity. This product also contains benzyl alcohol, which has been associated with fatal “gasping syndrome” in premature infants.

Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze, and use immediately once opened. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
