About Cystagon
Overview
Cystagon is a prescription capsule containing cysteamine bitartrate. The supplied FDA label is for PROCYSBI, not Cystagon, and describes its use for nephropathic cystinosis in adults and children aged 1 year and older. Common side effects reported in the supplied Procysbi label include vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, breath or skin odor, diarrhea, tiredness, rash and headache in patients aged 6 years and older previously treated with cysteamine. In children aged 1 to under 6 years starting cysteamine, common effects include vomiting, stomach and intestinal infections, diarrhea, breath odor, nausea, electrolyte imbalance and headache. Contact a doctor promptly for severe rash, skin or bone changes, or severe, persistent or worsening abdominal symptoms. Serious risks listed include Ehlers-Danlos-like syndrome affecting the skin and bones; severe skin reactions; stomach or intestinal ulcers and bleeding; fibrosing colonopathy, which involves scarring of the colon; nervous system symptoms; low white blood cell counts; raised alkaline phosphatase levels; and increased pressure inside the skull. Blood tests and monitoring may be needed to detect some of these problems. The supplied label is for Procysbi, not Cystagon, so it does not establish Cystagon-specific side-effect information.

Before taking this medicine
The supplied FDA label is for PROCYSBI, not Cystagon. It states that people who have had a serious allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, to penicillamine or cysteamine must not take PROCYSBI. The label calls for caution and monitoring for skin and bone lesions resembling Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, severe skin rash, stomach or intestinal ulcers or bleeding, nervous system symptoms, low white blood cell counts, raised alkaline phosphatase levels, and increased pressure inside the skull. Severe, persistent or worsening abdominal symptoms require evaluation for fibrosing colonopathy, a condition involving scarring of the colon. Severe skin rash requires treatment discontinuation; other serious findings may also require treatment changes or discontinuation by the prescriber. Breastfeeding is not recommended. A Cystagon label is needed to confirm Cystagon-specific contraindications and precautions.
