About Cytovene‑IV
Overview
Cytovene‑IV contains ganciclovir as ganciclovir sodium, an antiviral medicine given into a vein. It is used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, an infection of the retina, in adults with weakened immune systems, including those with AIDS. It is also used to prevent CMV disease in adult transplant recipients at risk of this infection. It works by blocking an enzyme CMV needs to copy its DNA.

Side effects
Commonly reported side effects and abnormal blood test results include fever, diarrhea, low white blood cell counts, nausea, anemia, weakness, headache, cough, reduced appetite, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, excessive sweating, increased blood creatinine (a marker of kidney function), and sepsis, a serious infection. Contact a doctor promptly about serious effects, including sepsis, blood cell problems or impaired kidney function. Kidney problems are a particular concern in older people and transplant recipients taking other medicines that can harm the kidneys. Kidney function should be monitored during treatment. The label also warns about impaired fertility, harm to an unborn baby, genetic damage and cancer risk. Discuss these serious risks with your doctor.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Cytovene‑IV if you have had a clinically significant allergic reaction, such as anaphylaxis, to ganciclovir, valganciclovir or any ingredient in the medicine. Caution is needed if you have impaired kidney function, are older, or take other medicines that can harm the kidneys, particularly after a transplant. Increased blood creatinine levels, a sign of reduced kidney function, have been reported. Kidney function should be monitored during treatment, and your prescriber will need to adjust treatment if you have kidney impairment. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
Interactions
Ganciclovir can interact with the following medicines: • Imipenem-cilastatin: Seizures have been reported with this combination. Use together is generally not recommended unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. • Cyclosporine or amphotericin B: May increase the risk of kidney toxicity. Kidney function should be monitored. • Mycophenolate mofetil: May increase the risk of harmful effects on blood cells and kidneys. Monitoring for toxicity is needed. • Other medicines that suppress blood cell production or can harm the kidneys: These include dapsone, doxorubicin, flucytosine, hydroxyurea, pentamidine, tacrolimus, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, vinblastine, vincristine and zidovudine. They should be used with ganciclovir only when the potential benefits outweigh the risks. • Didanosine: Ganciclovir may increase didanosine levels. Close monitoring is needed for toxicity, including inflammation of the pancreas. • Probenecid: May increase ganciclovir levels. Monitoring for ganciclovir toxicity is needed. Raise these medicines with your doctor. If you have impaired kidney function, combining ganciclovir with medicines cleared from the body by the same pathway may increase levels of either medicine, requiring close monitoring for harmful effects.
