About Defitelio
Overview
Defitelio contains defibrotide sodium and is given into a vein. It treats adults and children with hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD), also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS), who have kidney or lung dysfunction following a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant. How it works is not fully understood, but laboratory studies suggest it helps break down blood clots and protects the cells lining blood vessels from damage.
What it treats
Hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD), also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS), with kidney or lung dysfunction following hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT), in adults and children.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects reported during Defitelio treatment include low blood pressure, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and nosebleeds. Each was reported in at least 10% of patients, whether or not it was caused by Defitelio. Serious reactions include bleeding and severe or life-threatening allergic reactions. Contact a doctor immediately if bleeding or signs of an allergic reaction occur. Patients must be monitored for bleeding, and significant bleeding may require treatment to be paused or stopped. A severe or life-threatening allergic reaction requires Defitelio to be stopped, appropriate treatment and monitoring until symptoms resolve.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Defitelio if you are allergic to defibrotide sodium or any of its other ingredients, or if you are receiving systemic anticoagulants (blood thinners) or fibrinolytic medicines (medicines that dissolve blood clots). Patients must be monitored for bleeding. If significant bleeding occurs, treatment must be withheld or stopped. If a severe or life-threatening allergic reaction occurs, treatment must be stopped, the reaction treated, and the patient monitored until signs and symptoms resolve.
Interactions
Defitelio must not be used with antithrombotic or fibrinolytic medicines, such as heparin or alteplase. It may increase their effects and raise the risk of bleeding. Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines that prevent blood clots or dissolve them.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze, and use immediately once opened. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
