Duopa

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Duopa if you are taking a nonselective monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine, or have taken one within the past two weeks. Using these medicines together can cause high blood pressure. Duopa requires caution because gastrointestinal procedure-related complications can be serious and may require surgery or cause death. It can also cause sudden sleep during everyday activities, low blood pressure on standing, hallucinations, psychosis, confusion, impulse-control problems, and new or worsening involuntary movements (dyskinesia). Monitoring is needed for low blood pressure on standing, especially when treatment starts or the dose increases, and for depression and suicidal thoughts or behaviour. Do not stop Duopa suddenly or reduce it rapidly, as this can cause dangerously high body temperature and confusion. Any treatment changes should be managed by the prescriber. Duopa may harm an unborn baby, based on animal studies. Discuss its use with your prescriber if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
