About Dynacin
Overview
Dynacin contains minocycline hydrochloride, a prescription antibiotic supplied as capsules. It treats certain bacterial infections, including respiratory, skin and urinary tract infections, and may be used alongside other treatments for severe acne. It works against bacteria that are susceptible to minocycline.
What it treats
- Certain infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, Q fever, relapsing fever, plague, tularemia and cholera. - Certain respiratory, urinary tract, skin and eye infections, with susceptibility testing where required. - Certain sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydial infections, lymphogranuloma venereum and chancroid. - Selected infections when penicillin cannot be used, including gonorrhea, syphilis, yaws, listeriosis and anthrax. - Severe acne, as an additional treatment. - Acute intestinal amebiasis, alongside medicines that treat amebiasis. - Confirmed meningococcal carriage without symptoms, to clear bacteria from the nose and throat in selected high-risk situations, not to treat meningococcal infection.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, indigestion, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, a spinning sensation and drowsiness. Other reported effects include itching, rash, sensitivity to sunlight, hair loss, joint or muscle pain, and discoloration of the skin, nails, teeth or mouth. Ringing in the ears and reduced hearing have also been reported. The label does not establish how common most of these reactions are. Seek immediate medical help for a severe allergic reaction, swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe blistering or peeling skin reaction. These reactions can be fatal. Other serious reactions that warrant contacting a doctor include bowel inflammation, inflammation or ulcers of the food pipe, pancreatitis, liver inflammation or failure, jaundice, kidney inflammation or failure, blood cell disorders, seizures and increased pressure inside the skull. Serious hypersensitivity, lupus-like and serum sickness-like syndromes have been reported, sometimes with fatal outcomes. These may involve fever, rash or hives, swollen glands, joint pain or swelling, and inflammation of organs such as the liver, lungs, kidneys or heart. The label calls for immediate discontinuation if one of these syndromes is recognized. Abnormal thyroid function has been reported. Thyroid cancer has also been reported in association with minocycline use; this does not establish that minocycline caused it. The label advises considering monitoring for signs of thyroid cancer during prolonged treatment.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Dynacin if you have had an allergic reaction to minocycline, any other tetracycline antibiotic, or any ingredient in the capsules.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take any of the following: - Anticoagulants (blood thinners): minocycline may increase their effect, so your doctor may need to adjust your anticoagulant treatment. - Penicillin: minocycline may interfere with its antibacterial action, so using them together should be avoided. - Antacids containing aluminum, calcium or magnesium, or iron-containing products: these can reduce minocycline absorption. - Oral contraceptives: minocycline may make them less effective. - Isotretinoin: use should be avoided shortly before, during and shortly after minocycline treatment. Both medicines have been associated with increased pressure around the brain. - Ergot alkaloids or their derivatives: taking these with minocycline increases the risk of ergotism (ergot toxicity).

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
