About Effexor XR

Overview

Effexor XR contains venlafaxine hydrochloride, an antidepressant in the serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) class. It is used in adults to treat major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Its exact action is unclear, but it is thought to work by reducing the reabsorption of serotonin and norepinephrine, increasing their activity in the central nervous system.

Side effects

Common side effects include nausea, sleepiness, dry mouth, sweating, reduced appetite, constipation, reduced sex drive, ejaculation problems and difficulty getting or maintaining an erection. Contact a doctor if you develop serious side effects, including allergic reactions, suicidal thoughts or behaviour (a risk highlighted in adolescents and young adults), serotonin syndrome, raised blood pressure, unusual bleeding, angle-closure glaucoma, mania or hypomania, seizures, low blood sodium, or inflammatory lung conditions. Serotonin syndrome can occur with Effexor XR alone, and the risk increases when it is taken with other medicines that affect serotonin. Bleeding risk may increase when it is taken with aspirin, NSAIDs, antiplatelet medicines or anticoagulants. Symptoms can also occur when treatment is reduced or stopped; discuss stopping treatment with your prescriber. Changes in weight, height and appetite have been reported in children and adolescents.

When to call your doctor

• Seek immediate medical attention for thoughts of suicide, suicidal behavior, or worsening mental health symptoms. • Get urgent medical help for a seizure. • Seek medical attention immediately for unusual bleeding.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Effexor XR if you are allergic to venlafaxine hydrochloride, desvenlafaxine succinate or any of its other ingredients. Do not take it while using a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), including linezolid or intravenous methylene blue, or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI, because of the risk of serotonin syndrome. Conditions requiring caution include high blood pressure, untreated narrow drainage angles in the eyes, bipolar disorder and a history of seizures. High blood pressure should be controlled before treatment and monitored regularly. Screening for bipolar disorder is needed before treatment. Serotonin syndrome can occur with Effexor XR alone, and the risk increases with other medicines that affect serotonin. Aspirin, NSAIDs, other antiplatelet medicines, warfarin and other anticoagulants may increase bleeding risk when used with Effexor XR. Other risks include low blood sodium, interstitial lung disease, eosinophilic pneumonia and sexual dysfunction. Use during the third trimester of pregnancy may increase the risk of breathing problems, unstable body temperature, feeding difficulties, low muscle tone, tremor or irritability in the newborn. Do not stop treatment suddenly; stopping should be managed by your prescriber because withdrawal symptoms can occur.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
