About Ella
Overview
Ella contains ulipristal acetate and is an emergency contraceptive tablet used to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or known or suspected contraceptive failure. It works mainly by delaying or preventing ovulation, the release of an egg. Ella is not intended for routine use as a contraceptive.
What it treats
- Prevention of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or known or suspected contraceptive failure (emergency contraception). Ella is not intended for routine contraception.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, painful periods, tiredness and dizziness. Contact a doctor if you become pregnant or develop lower abdominal pain after taking Ella. You should be assessed for an ectopic pregnancy, which is a pregnancy outside the womb. Ella may also change the timing of your next period. If your period is more than one week late, contact a doctor to check for pregnancy.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Ella if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Ella is not intended to end an existing pregnancy. If you become pregnant or have lower abdominal pain after taking Ella, seek medical assessment to check for an ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside the womb). Fertility is likely to return quickly after use. Use a reliable barrier method of contraception for any subsequent intercourse until your next menstrual period. Ella may change when your next period occurs. If it is more than one week late, check for pregnancy. Ella does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
Interactions
Medicines or herbal products that increase the activity of the liver enzyme CYP3A4 can make Ella less effective. Tell your doctor about any medicines, supplements or herbal products you use. Starting a contraceptive containing progestin may reduce Ella’s ability to delay ovulation. Ask your doctor when to start or restart progestin-containing contraception.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
