About Entocort EC

Overview

Budesonide extended-release tablets are a corticosteroid medicine. They are used to bring active, mild to moderate ulcerative colitis into remission. The tablet coating delays release until it reaches the small intestine, where budesonide is then released gradually to act locally as a corticosteroid.

What it treats

To induce remission in active, mild to moderate ulcerative colitis.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include headache, nausea, reduced blood cortisol levels, upper abdominal pain, tiredness, gas, bloating, acne, urinary tract infection, joint pain and constipation. Contact your doctor if you develop a new or worsening infection, signs of excessive steroid effects, or symptoms of reduced adrenal gland function. Budesonide can suppress the immune system and increase the risk of infections, including potentially fatal chickenpox and measles. Excessive steroid effects and reduced adrenal function can occur during treatment. Switching from another systemic corticosteroid may also cause impaired adrenal function and steroid withdrawal symptoms. Kaposi’s sarcoma, a type of cancer, has been reported in people receiving corticosteroid therapy, most often for chronic conditions.

When to call your doctor

- Contact your doctor promptly if you develop a new infection or an existing infection gets worse.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take budesonide tablets if you are allergic to budesonide or any of the tablet’s ingredients. Budesonide can cause excess corticosteroid effects and reduce the adrenal glands’ normal function. Switching from a corticosteroid with stronger effects throughout the body requires medical supervision because adrenal function may be impaired. Budesonide can weaken the immune system and increase the risk of new or worsening infections. Chickenpox and measles can be fatal during treatment. Use should be avoided in people with fungal infections, Strongyloides infestation, cerebral malaria or herpes simplex infection of the eye. Screening for hepatitis B is recommended. Caution is needed during pregnancy because animal studies suggest possible harm to the unborn baby. People with liver impairment need monitoring for excess corticosteroid effects. Kaposi’s sarcoma has been reported in people receiving corticosteroid treatment, most often for chronic conditions.

Interactions

Avoid CYP3A4 inhibitors, such as ketoconazole, and grapefruit juice while taking budesonide. They may increase corticosteroid effects throughout the body. Ask your doctor whether any medicines you take inhibit CYP3A4.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
