About Entresto

Overview

Entresto is a prescription medicine containing sacubitril and valsartan. It is used in adults with chronic heart failure to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospital admission for heart failure, with benefits most clearly seen when the heart’s main pumping chamber pumps less well than normal. It also treats symptomatic heart failure in children aged one year and older whose left ventricle has reduced pumping ability. It works by increasing levels of natural substances that affect the heart and kidneys while blocking the effects of a hormone called angiotensin II.

What it treats

- Chronic heart failure in adults, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure. Benefits are clearest when the left ventricular ejection fraction is below normal. - Symptomatic heart failure with systemic left ventricular systolic dysfunction in children aged one year and older.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include low blood pressure, high blood potassium, cough, dizziness and kidney failure. These were reported in at least 5% of patients. Serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include angioedema (swelling), low blood pressure, worsening kidney function or kidney failure, and high blood potassium. Some common side effects can also be serious.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for swelling under the skin (angioedema). - Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant. Entresto must be stopped as soon as pregnancy is detected because it can harm or cause the death of the developing baby.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Entresto if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or have previously had angioedema (swelling under the skin) linked to an ACE inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). Do not take Entresto with an ACE inhibitor. A gap of at least 36 hours is required when switching from an ACE inhibitor to Entresto or from Entresto to an ACE inhibitor. Do not take Entresto with aliskiren if you have diabetes. Use is not recommended in people with severe liver impairment. If you are breastfeeding, either breastfeeding or Entresto must be stopped; discuss this with your prescriber. Watch for signs of angioedema and low blood pressure. Kidney function and potassium levels should be monitored in people at risk of problems.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take any of the following: - Aliskiren: Avoid use with Entresto if your estimated kidney filtration rate (eGFR) is below 60. - Potassium-sparing diuretics: Taking these with Entresto may increase blood potassium levels. - Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Taking these with Entresto may increase the risk of kidney problems. - Lithium: Taking this with Entresto increases the risk of lithium toxicity.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
