About Eraxis
Overview
Eraxis is a prescription antifungal medicine containing anidulafungin, supplied as a vial for intravenous infusion. It treats Candida bloodstream infections, Candida abscesses within the abdomen and Candida infections of the abdominal lining in adults and children aged 1 month and older. It also treats Candida infections of the esophagus in adults, although these infections have a high rate of returning after treatment. It works by blocking the production of an essential component of fungal cell walls.
What it treats
- Candida bloodstream infections (candidemia), Candida-related abscesses within the abdomen, and Candida infection of the abdominal lining (peritonitis) in adults and children aged 1 month and older. - Candida infection of the esophagus (esophageal candidiasis) in adults. Relapse rates are high with Eraxis for this condition.

Side effects
Common side effects vary by the infection being treated and the patient’s age: In adults treated for Candida bloodstream infections or other Candida infections, common side effects include low potassium levels, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, difficulty sleeping and low blood pressure. In adults treated for Candida infection of the esophagus, common side effects include diarrhea, fever, anemia, headache, vomiting, nausea, indigestion, oral thrush and low potassium levels. In children aged 1 month and older treated for Candida bloodstream infections or other Candida infections, common side effects include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, anemia, low platelet counts, increased liver enzymes, low blood sugar, nosebleeds and rash. Serious reactions include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and shock. Infusion-related reactions can include rash, hives, flushing, itching, narrowing of the airways, difficulty breathing and low blood pressure. Tell the healthcare professional immediately if these occur during an infusion. Severe allergic reactions or breathing difficulty require immediate medical attention. Eraxis can cause abnormal liver tests, liver inflammation and liver failure. Liver function should be monitored during treatment, and any liver problems require prompt medical review. Eraxis contains fructose. In people with hereditary fructose intolerance, it can trigger a life-threatening metabolic crisis, including severely low blood sugar, low phosphate levels, lactic acid buildup and liver failure. Tell the doctor about known or suspected hereditary fructose intolerance before treatment.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Eraxis if you have a known allergy to anidulafungin, any ingredient in Eraxis, or other echinocandins. It must not be used in anyone with known or suspected hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI). Eraxis contains fructose, which can cause a life-threatening metabolic crisis in people with HFI. Children should be checked for a history of HFI symptoms before treatment. Eraxis can cause abnormal liver tests, liver inflammation or liver failure. Liver function should be monitored during treatment. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, have been reported. Infusion-related reactions can include rash, hives, flushing, itching, breathing difficulty and low blood pressure. If you are pregnant, discuss the risk with your prescriber. Animal studies indicate that Eraxis may harm an unborn baby. Eraxis is not approved for infants younger than 1 month; safety and effectiveness have not been established in this age group. It contains polysorbate 80, an ingredient associated with serious toxicity in low-birth-weight infants receiving high amounts of polysorbate.
