About Erythromycin
Overview
Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic supplied as tablets. It treats certain infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including mild to moderate respiratory tract and skin infections, as well as whooping cough. It works by blocking the production of proteins that susceptible bacteria need.
What it treats
- Certain mild to moderate upper and lower respiratory tract infections. - Respiratory infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae. - Certain mild to moderate skin and soft tissue infections. - Listeriosis. - Whooping cough (pertussis). - Diphtheria, alongside antitoxin treatment, and elimination of the bacteria in carriers. - Erythrasma, a bacterial skin infection. - Intestinal amebiasis; infection outside the intestine requires other medicines. - Certain chlamydial infections, including urogenital infections during pregnancy and uncomplicated urethral, cervical or rectal infections when tetracyclines cannot be used. - Nongonococcal urethritis caused by Ureaplasma urealyticum when tetracyclines cannot be used. - Primary syphilis, as an alternative for patients allergic to penicillins. - Legionnaires’ disease, for which the label notes limited preliminary evidence of effectiveness. Use is limited to infections proven or strongly suspected to involve susceptible organisms.
Safety information
Side effects
The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and loss of appetite. Contact a doctor if you develop signs of a serious reaction. Reported serious side effects include liver inflammation or impaired liver function; severe bowel inflammation (pseudomembranous colitis), which may occur during or after treatment; changes in the heart’s electrical activity (QT prolongation) and potentially dangerous heart rhythms; and allergic reactions, including hives and anaphylaxis. Rare reports include severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, inflammation of the pancreas and seizures. Kidney inflammation has also been reported during erythromycin use. Isolated cases of reversible hearing loss have occurred, chiefly in people with impaired kidney function or those receiving high doses. Seek emergency medical help for anaphylaxis or a severe skin reaction.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take erythromycin if you are allergic to erythromycin or are taking terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, ergotamine or dihydroergotamine. Do not take erythromycin with lovastatin or simvastatin. These combinations increase the risk of muscle injury, including serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis).
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take colchicine, simvastatin, lovastatin, atorvastatin, or calcium channel blockers such as verapamil, amlodipine or diltiazem. Erythromycin taken with colchicine can cause potentially life-threatening colchicine toxicity, even when both medicines are used as prescribed. Taking erythromycin with the listed statins can cause serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis). Kidney problems have also been reported in seriously ill patients taking erythromycin with lovastatin; the label recommends careful monitoring of muscle and liver enzyme levels during combined use. Taking erythromycin with the listed calcium channel blockers can cause low blood pressure.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
