About Flagyl
Overview
Flagyl contains metronidazole, a prescription antimicrobial medicine. Metronidazole tablets treat confirmed trichomoniasis, intestinal amebiasis, amebic liver abscess and certain serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria. It acts against the bacteria and parasites responsible for these infections.
What it treats
• Laboratory-confirmed trichomoniasis, including certain infections without symptoms and treatment of sexual partners as appropriate to prevent reinfection. • Intestinal amebiasis (amebic dysentery) and amebic liver abscess. • Serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria affecting the abdomen, skin and underlying tissues, female reproductive organs, bloodstream, brain and surrounding tissues, lower respiratory tract, or heart lining and valves. • Bone and joint infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria, as an additional treatment. These indications apply to metronidazole tablets; the supplied label does not cover pessaries.
Safety information
Side effects
The most commonly reported side effects of metronidazole tablets affect the digestive system: nausea, sometimes with headache, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, upper stomach discomfort, abdominal cramps and constipation. An unpleasant metallic taste can also occur. Other reported effects include a coated or sore tongue, mouth inflammation, dizziness, itching, rash and vaginal Candida overgrowth. Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you develop neurological symptoms, such as numbness or tingling in an arm or leg, seizures, confusion, difficulty speaking, problems with balance or coordination, or changes in vision or hearing. Serious brain inflammation and inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord have been reported. Nerve damage can persist, particularly after prolonged treatment. Other serious reported reactions that warrant prompt medical attention include severe skin reactions, including blistering or peeling skin; changes in the heart’s electrical rhythm, especially when taken with other medicines that can cause similar changes; reduced white blood cell or platelet counts; and inflammation of the pancreas. Severe, irreversible liver damage and acute liver failure, including fatal cases, have been reported in patients with Cockayne syndrome. These reactions can develop rapidly after treatment begins.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take metronidazole tablets if you: • Have previously had an allergic reaction to metronidazole or another nitroimidazole medicine. • Are in the first trimester of pregnancy and are being treated for trichomoniasis. • Have taken disulfiram within the past two weeks. Psychotic reactions have been reported in people with alcoholism who used oral metronidazole and disulfiram together. • Have Cockayne syndrome. Severe, irreversible liver damage and acute liver failure, including fatal cases, have been reported after starting metronidazole in people with this condition. Avoid alcohol and products containing propylene glycol during treatment and for at least three days after treatment ends. Combining these with oral metronidazole can cause abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headaches and flushing.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take any of the following before using metronidazole: • Disulfiram: Do not use metronidazole if you have taken disulfiram within the past two weeks. Psychotic reactions have been reported when these medicines are used together. • Warfarin or other oral coumarin blood thinners: Metronidazole can increase their blood-thinning effect. Clotting tests, including INR, need careful monitoring. • Lithium: Metronidazole may raise lithium levels and cause toxicity, particularly in people taking relatively high lithium doses. Your doctor should check lithium and creatinine levels several days after treatment starts. • Busulfan: Metronidazole can raise busulfan levels and increase the risk of serious toxicity. These medicines should only be used together if the benefit outweighs the risk, with frequent monitoring of busulfan levels. • Cimetidine: This may slow the removal of metronidazole from the body. • Phenytoin or phenobarbital: These may lower metronidazole levels by speeding up its removal. Metronidazole may also slow the removal of phenytoin. Alcoholic drinks and products containing propylene glycol can cause abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache and flushing during or after metronidazole treatment. Ask your doctor how long to avoid them after treatment ends.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
