About Fortaz
Overview
Fortaz contains ceftazidime, an antibacterial medicine. It treats infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including pneumonia and infections of the skin, urinary tract, bloodstream, bones, joints, female genital tract and abdomen, as well as certain cases of meningitis. It works by blocking bacteria from building their cell walls, which kills them.
What it treats
Fortaz (ceftazidime) is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including: - Lower respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia - Skin and skin-structure infections - Urinary tract infections, both complicated and uncomplicated - Bacterial bloodstream infections (septicemia) - Bone and joint infections - Gynecologic infections, including infections of the uterine lining and pelvic tissues - Infections within the abdomen, including peritonitis - Central nervous system infections, including meningitis
Safety information
Side effects
The most commonly reported side effects of Fortaz (ceftazidime) include inflammation at the injection site or in the vein, itching, rash, fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Less frequent effects include headache, dizziness, tingling, oral thrush and vaginal inflammation. Seek urgent medical help for serious allergic reactions, including swelling, difficulty breathing or a drop in blood pressure, or severe skin reactions such as Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Contact a doctor promptly for diarrhea that is severe or occurs during or after treatment, as this may be associated with pseudomembranous colitis, a serious inflammation of the colon. Seizures have also been reported. Serious effects on the brain and nervous system, including impaired brain function, coma and involuntary muscle movements, have occurred in people with kidney impairment whose dosing was not adjusted. Rarely, breakdown of red blood cells causing anemia has been reported. Fortaz can also cause temporary changes in blood cell counts and liver or kidney blood tests.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Fortaz if you have had an allergic reaction to ceftazidime or any cephalosporin antibiotic.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take aminoglycoside antibiotics or strong diuretics such as furosemide. Kidney damage has been reported when these medicines are used with cephalosporin antibiotics such as Fortaz. Your doctor should monitor kidney function carefully, particularly with prolonged treatment or higher aminoglycoside doses. Aminoglycosides can also damage hearing. Fortaz should not be combined with chloramphenicol because it may reduce Fortaz’s antibacterial activity. Fortaz may reduce the effectiveness of combined oral contraceptive pills containing estrogen and progesterone by changing gut bacteria and reducing estrogen reabsorption. If you use this type of contraception, discuss this with your doctor.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
