About Glipizide
Overview
Glipizide is an oral medicine in a group called sulfonylureas. It is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It works mainly by helping the pancreas release insulin, which requires functioning insulin-producing cells. It is not for treating type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include dizziness, diarrhea, nervousness, trembling, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and gas. Low blood sugar can be severe. Contact a doctor if it occurs. The risk is higher in older adults, people with kidney impairment and those taking other diabetes medicines. Another serious risk is hemolytic anemia, a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed. This can occur in people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and warrants medical attention. Sulfonylureas, the medicine class that includes glipizide, carry a warning about a possible increased risk of death from cardiovascular causes. Discuss this risk and treatment alternatives with your doctor.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take glipizide if you are allergic to glipizide, any of the product’s ingredients, or sulfonamide derivatives. Glipizide can cause severe low blood sugar. Extra caution and close monitoring are needed in older adults and people with kidney or liver impairment. The risk also needs attention when glipizide is used with other diabetes medicines. People with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency may develop hemolytic anemia, a condition in which red blood cells break down. The prescriber should consider a non-sulfonylurea alternative. Sulfonylureas carry a potential increased risk of death from cardiovascular causes. Discuss the risks, benefits and treatment alternatives with your prescriber. Glipizide has not been conclusively shown to reduce the risk of major blood vessel complications.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, as some can affect blood sugar and may require closer monitoring or a treatment adjustment. Oral miconazole taken with glipizide can cause severely low blood sugar. Fluconazole can increase glipizide exposure, so close monitoring is needed. If you take colesevelam, ask your doctor how to separate it from glipizide.
