About Haldol
Overview
Haldol Decanoate contains haloperidol decanoate, a typical antipsychotic given by injection into a muscle. It treats schizophrenia in adults who were previously taking a stable dose of immediate-release oral haloperidol. Its exact action is unclear, but it may work by blocking dopamine type 2 receptors in the brain.

Side effects
For Haldol Decanoate injection, the most common side effects reported in at least 5% of patients were involuntary eye movements or spasms (oculogyric crisis) and Parkinson-like movement problems (parkinsonism). Serious side effects that warrant urgent medical attention include dangerous changes in heart rhythm, including QT prolongation and torsades de pointes, which can cause sudden death; seizures; allergic reactions; and neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a serious nervous system reaction. The label also warns about stroke in older people with dementia-related psychosis. Contact a doctor promptly about involuntary movements (tardive dyskinesia), a fast heartbeat or low blood pressure. Other important risks include reduced white blood cell counts and raised prolactin levels. Blood count monitoring may be needed, especially in people with a history of low white blood cell counts. Taking lithium with this medicine can cause serious neurological toxicity. Severe neurological toxicity is also a risk in people with an overactive thyroid. This medicine may impair thinking and movement. Do not drive or operate hazardous machinery until you are reasonably certain it does not affect these abilities.

Interactions
Avoid using HALDOL DECANOATE with other medicines that prolong the QTc interval, a measure of the heart’s electrical activity. Ask your doctor to check whether any medicines you take have this effect.
