About Humulin 70/30
Overview
Humulin 70/30 is a fixed mixture of 70% intermediate-acting human insulin (NPH) and 30% short-acting human insulin (regular). It is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with diabetes mellitus. It lowers blood sugar by helping muscle and fat cells take up glucose and reducing the amount of glucose made by the liver.

Side effects
Reported side effects include injection-site reactions, changes in fatty tissue under the skin, itching, rash, weight gain and swelling from fluid buildup. The label does not provide reliable estimates of how often these occur. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can be life-threatening. Serious allergic reactions and low potassium levels can also be life-threatening. Seek urgent medical help for these serious reactions. Fluid retention and heart failure can occur when Humulin 70/30 is used with medicines called thiazolidinediones (TZDs). Contact your doctor if you develop signs or symptoms of heart failure. Changes to your insulin regimen can cause high or low blood sugar and should be made under close medical supervision with more frequent blood sugar checks. Always check the insulin label before injecting to avoid mix-ups that could cause low blood sugar.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Humulin 70/30 during an episode of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), or if you have had an allergic reaction to Humulin 70/30 or any of its ingredients. Extra caution and closer blood sugar monitoring are needed if you have kidney or liver impairment, cannot recognise the warning signs of low blood sugar, or have changes in meals, physical activity or medicines that lower blood sugar. Changes to your insulin treatment, injection site or administration method require close medical supervision and more frequent blood sugar checks. Low blood sugar, severe allergic reactions and low potassium levels can be life-threatening. If a severe allergic reaction occurs, stop using Humulin 70/30 and seek immediate medical help. People at risk of low potassium may need potassium monitoring. Taking Humulin 70/30 with thiazolidinediones (TZDs) can cause fluid retention and heart failure, so monitoring for signs and symptoms of heart failure is needed. Check the insulin label before every injection to avoid mix-ups. Never share a Humulin 70/30 KwikPen or syringe, even if the needle is changed.
Interactions
Other medicines can change how Humulin 70/30 affects blood sugar. Tell your doctor if you use any of the following: • Medicines that may increase the risk of low blood sugar: other diabetes medicines, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, disopyramide, fibrates, fluoxetine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, pentoxifylline, pramlintide, salicylates, somatostatin analogues such as octreotide, and sulfonamide antibiotics. • Medicines that may reduce its blood sugar-lowering effect: atypical antipsychotics such as olanzapine or clozapine, corticosteroids, danazol, diuretics, estrogens, glucagon, isoniazid, niacin, oral contraceptives, phenothiazines, progestogens, protease inhibitors, somatropin, medicines such as albuterol, epinephrine or terbutaline, and thyroid hormones. • Alcohol, beta-blockers, clonidine and lithium salts may either increase or decrease its blood sugar-lowering effect. Pentamidine may cause low blood sugar, sometimes followed by high blood sugar. • Beta-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine and reserpine may reduce or hide the warning signs of low blood sugar. Your doctor may need to adjust your insulin treatment and recommend more frequent blood sugar checks when these medicines are used with Humulin 70/30.
Using Humulin 70/30
Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use and how long it may be kept at room temperature afterwards. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
