About Humulin N
Overview
Humulin N contains insulin isophane human (NPH), an intermediate-acting human insulin supplied as an injectable suspension in a vial. It is used to improve blood sugar control in adults and children with diabetes mellitus. It lowers blood sugar by helping muscle and fat cells take up glucose and reducing the amount of glucose made by the liver.

Diabetes mellitus in adults and children, to improve blood sugar control.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include injection-site reactions, changes in fatty tissue at injection sites, itching, rash, weight gain and swelling. The label does not reliably establish how often these occur. Serious side effects include low blood sugar, severe allergic reactions and low blood potassium. These can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention. Using Humulin N with medicines called thiazolidinediones (TZDs) can cause fluid retention and heart failure. Contact your doctor promptly if signs or symptoms of heart failure occur. Insulin mix-ups can cause low blood sugar. Check the insulin label before every injection. Changes to your insulin treatment should be made under close medical supervision with more frequent blood sugar monitoring.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Humulin N during an episode of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), or if you have had an allergic reaction to Humulin N or any of its ingredients. Low blood sugar can be life-threatening. More frequent blood glucose checks may be needed if your insulin treatment, other blood sugar-lowering medicines, meals or physical activity change. Extra monitoring is also important if you have kidney or liver problems, or do not notice the warning signs of low blood sugar. Changes to your insulin regimen should be made only under close medical supervision. Severe allergic reactions and low blood potassium can also be life-threatening. Stop using Humulin N if a severe allergic reaction occurs and seek urgent medical help. Potassium monitoring may be needed if you are at risk of low potassium. Using Humulin N with thiazolidinediones (TZDs) can cause fluid retention and heart failure, so monitoring for heart failure is needed. Check the insulin label before every injection to avoid mix-ups. Never share syringes with another person, even if the needle is changed.
Interactions
Other medicines and alcohol can affect how Humulin N controls blood sugar. Your prescriber may need to adjust your treatment and recommend more frequent blood sugar checks. Medicines that may increase the risk of low blood sugar include other diabetes medicines, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, disopyramide, fibrates, fluoxetine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, pentoxifylline, pramlintide, salicylates, somatostatin analogues such as octreotide, and sulfonamide antibiotics. Medicines that may reduce Humulin N’s blood sugar-lowering effect include atypical antipsychotics such as olanzapine and clozapine, corticosteroids, danazol, diuretics, estrogens, glucagon, isoniazid, niacin, oral contraceptives, phenothiazines, progestogens, protease inhibitors, somatropin, sympathomimetic medicines such as albuterol, epinephrine and terbutaline, and thyroid hormones. Alcohol, beta-blockers, clonidine and lithium salts may either increase or decrease Humulin N’s blood sugar-lowering effect. Pentamidine may cause low blood sugar, sometimes followed by high blood sugar. Beta-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine and reserpine can make warning signs of low blood sugar less noticeable or absent. More frequent blood sugar checks may be needed. Discuss these interactions with your doctor.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
