About Humulin R
Overview
Humulin R contains insulin human, a short-acting insulin. It is used to improve blood sugar control in adults and children with diabetes mellitus. It lowers blood sugar by helping muscle and fat cells take up glucose and reducing the amount of glucose the liver produces.

Side effects
Reported side effects include injection-site reactions, changes in fatty tissue at injection sites (lipodystrophy), weight gain, swelling, itching and rash. Low blood sugar and allergic reactions can also occur. Low blood sugar, severe allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis) and low potassium can be life-threatening. Seek urgent medical attention for a severe allergic reaction or severe low blood sugar. Your doctor may monitor potassium levels if you are at risk. Taking Humulin R with medicines called thiazolidinediones (TZDs) can cause fluid retention and heart failure; contact your doctor if these develop.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Humulin R during an episode of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), or if you are allergic to Humulin R or any of its ingredients. Low blood sugar can be life-threatening. More frequent blood sugar checks are needed when your insulin treatment, other blood sugar-lowering medicines, meal patterns or physical activity change. Extra monitoring is also needed if you have kidney or liver impairment, or do not recognise the warning signs of low blood sugar. Changes to your insulin treatment, injection site or method of administration should be made under close medical supervision. Humulin R can cause severe, life-threatening allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Stop using it and seek urgent medical help if a severe allergic reaction occurs. It can also cause dangerously low potassium levels; people at risk need potassium monitoring. Using Humulin R with thiazolidinediones (TZDs) can cause fluid retention and heart failure. Your clinician should monitor for signs of heart failure and review treatment if it develops. Never share needles or syringes with anyone. Check the insulin label before every injection to avoid mix-ups.
Interactions
Some medicines and alcohol can change how Humulin R affects blood sugar: Other diabetes medicines, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, disopyramide, fibrates, fluoxetine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, pentoxifylline, pramlintide, salicylates, somatostatin analogues such as octreotide, and sulfonamide antibiotics may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Corticosteroids, diuretics, certain antipsychotics such as olanzapine and clozapine, phenothiazines, danazol, estrogens, progestogens, oral contraceptives, glucagon, isoniazid, niacin, protease inhibitors, somatropin, thyroid hormones, and medicines such as albuterol, epinephrine and terbutaline may reduce Humulin R’s blood sugar-lowering effect. Alcohol, beta-blockers, clonidine and lithium salts may either increase or decrease its blood sugar-lowering effect. Pentamidine may cause low blood sugar, sometimes followed by high blood sugar. Beta-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine and reserpine may make the warning signs of low blood sugar less noticeable or absent. Discuss these interactions with your doctor. More frequent blood sugar checks may be needed, and your prescriber may need to adjust your insulin dose.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
