Before taking this medicine

Do not use Increlex if you have a known allergy to mecasermin, closed growth plates (epiphyses), or cancer. Increlex can cause severe low blood sugar, including seizures. It should be given shortly before or after a meal or snack. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis requiring hospital care, have been reported. Stop treatment and seek prompt medical attention if a whole-body allergic reaction occurs. Other conditions requiring caution and monitoring include: - Increased pressure inside the skull: an examination of the back of the eye is recommended before treatment starts and periodically during treatment. - Enlarged tonsils or adenoids: periodic examinations are needed to check for complications. - A new limp or hip or knee pain in a child: this needs evaluation for a slipped hip growth plate and bone tissue death. - Scoliosis: children with an existing spinal curve should be monitored for worsening. - Cancer developing during treatment: treatment must be stopped and specialist medical care sought. Increlex contains benzyl alcohol, which has been associated with serious reactions, including death, in newborns and infants. Use in infants is not recommended. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children younger than 2 years.
