Invokana

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Invokana if you have had a serious allergic reaction to it, including anaphylaxis or angioedema (serious swelling). Invokana is not recommended during breastfeeding or for people with severe liver impairment. It may harm an unborn baby, especially during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Conditions requiring caution include: - Type 1 diabetes or other risk factors for ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis can occur even when blood glucose is not high. Invokana should be stopped if ketoacidosis is suspected. - Risk of lower-limb amputation. Infections or ulcers on the legs or feet need monitoring and appropriate treatment. - Low body fluid levels, kidney impairment, older age or use of loop diuretics. Fluid loss can cause low blood pressure and acute kidney injury. - Urinary or genital infections, which can be serious. Pain, tenderness, redness or swelling around the genitals or the area between the genitals and anus, together with fever or feeling unwell, requires immediate medical assessment. - Use of insulin or medicines that stimulate insulin release, which increases the risk of low blood sugar. - Risk factors for bone fractures, which should be assessed before treatment. Stop Invokana if an allergic reaction occurs and seek medical attention.
