About Lariam
Overview
Lariam contains mefloquine, an antimalarial medicine. It is used to treat malaria. It acts against malaria parasites in the blood, although exactly how it works is not known.
Safety information
Before taking this medicine
Do not take mefloquine if you are allergic to mefloquine, related medicines such as quinine or quinidine, or any ingredient in the tablets. Mefloquine must not be used to prevent malaria if you have active depression, a recent history of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia or another major psychiatric disorder, or a history of seizures.
Interactions
Interactions with mefloquine have not been studied in detail. Tell your doctor if you take a beta blocker such as propranolol. There is one report of a patient’s heart and breathing stopping while taking mefloquine with propranolol; the patient recovered fully. Also tell your doctor if you have heart disease. Mefloquine’s effects in people with impaired heart function have not been evaluated, so your doctor should weigh its benefits against possible adverse effects.

Storage
