About LIVTENCITY
Overview
LIVTENCITY contains maribavir, an antiviral medicine supplied as tablets. It treats cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection or disease after a transplant when it has not responded to ganciclovir, valganciclovir, cidofovir or foscarnet, whether or not the virus has genetic resistance to treatment. It is used in adults and children aged 12 years and older who weigh at least 35 kg. It works by blocking a CMV protein called pUL97 kinase.
What it treats
Post-transplant cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection or disease that has not responded to ganciclovir, valganciclovir, cidofovir or foscarnet, with or without genetic resistance to treatment, in adults and children aged 12 years and older who weigh at least 35 kg.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include changes in taste, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and fatigue. LIVTENCITY can increase blood levels of certain medicines that suppress the immune system, including tacrolimus, cyclosporine, sirolimus and everolimus. Even small changes in these levels may cause serious adverse effects. Contact your doctor if you take any of these medicines; frequent blood-level monitoring is needed during treatment, especially when LIVTENCITY is started and after it is stopped. Other drug interactions may cause side effects or reduce treatment effectiveness. Taking LIVTENCITY with ganciclovir or valganciclovir is not recommended because it may reduce their antiviral activity.
Before taking this medicine
The FDA label lists no contraindications for LIVTENCITY. However, taking it with ganciclovir or valganciclovir is not recommended because LIVTENCITY may reduce their antiviral activity. Other medicines can interact with LIVTENCITY, reducing its effect or increasing the risk of side effects from those medicines. LIVTENCITY can increase levels of certain medicines that suppress the immune system, including tacrolimus, cyclosporine, sirolimus and everolimus. Even small changes in these levels may cause serious side effects. Frequent blood-level monitoring is needed during treatment, especially when LIVTENCITY is started and after it is stopped. Treatment may fail to control cytomegalovirus (CMV) during or after treatment. CMV DNA levels should be monitored, and resistance should be checked if treatment is not working. Some resistance changes can also reduce the effectiveness of ganciclovir and valganciclovir.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifabutin or phenobarbital, as your LIVTENCITY dose may need adjustment by your prescriber. Taking LIVTENCITY with other medicines that strongly increase the activity of the enzyme CYP3A4 is not recommended.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
