About Lopressor

Overview

Lopressor contains metoprolol tartrate, a medicine known as a beta-blocker. It is used in adults with a heart attack whose blood circulation is stable, to reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular causes. It works by blocking signals at sites in the body called beta receptors.

What it treats

Heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults whose blood circulation is stable, to reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular causes.

Safety information

Side effects

Low blood pressure and a slow heartbeat are the most common side effects reported when Lopressor is used to treat a heart attack. Contact a doctor if you experience worsening heart failure, worsening heart block (a problem with the heart’s electrical signals), breathing difficulties from narrowed airways, or worsening symptoms of poor circulation in the limbs. Lopressor may also hide symptoms of low blood sugar in people with diabetes. Do not stop Lopressor suddenly without medical advice. Abrupt stopping can worsen reduced blood flow to the heart. In people with an overactive thyroid, sudden withdrawal may trigger a thyroid storm, a serious worsening of the condition.

- Seek medical attention immediately if your heartbeat becomes very slow. - Seek medical attention immediately if your blood pressure becomes very low.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Lopressor if you have a severely slow heartbeat, second- or third-degree heart block, cardiogenic shock, systolic blood pressure below 100, decompensated heart failure, or sick sinus syndrome without a permanent pacemaker. Do not take it if you are allergic to any component of the medicine. Conditions requiring caution include: - Heart failure, which may worsen. - Conditions that cause narrowing or spasms of the airways; beta-blockers should be avoided. - Pheochromocytoma; treatment with an alpha-blocker must be started first. - Diabetes, because Lopressor may hide symptoms of low blood sugar. - An overactive thyroid, because stopping suddenly may trigger a thyroid storm. - Peripheral vascular disease, because symptoms of poor blood flow in the arteries may worsen. - Liver impairment, which requires close monitoring for adverse effects. Do not stop Lopressor suddenly, as this may worsen reduced blood flow to the heart. Tell your surgical team if you take it: ongoing beta-blocker treatment should not routinely be stopped before surgery, and starting high-dose metoprolol in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery should be avoided.

Interactions

Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, especially: • Catecholamine-depleting medicines, which may add to the effects of Lopressor. • CYP2D6 inhibitors, which may increase metoprolol levels in the body. • Glycosides, clonidine, diltiazem or verapamil, which may increase the risk of a slow heartbeat when taken with Lopressor. Lopressor may worsen the rebound rise in blood pressure that can occur after stopping clonidine. Discuss any plans to stop clonidine with your doctor. Epinephrine used to treat an allergic reaction may not work as expected while you are taking Lopressor.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
