About Oracea
Overview
Oracea capsules contain doxycycline monohydrate, a tetracycline-class medicine. It is used in adults to treat the inflamed bumps and pus-filled spots of rosacea. Exactly how it works to treat these rosacea lesions is unknown. Oracea should not be used to treat or prevent bacterial infections.
What it treats
Inflammatory bumps and pus-filled spots (papules and pustules) associated with rosacea in adults.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include nose and throat inflammation, sinusitis, diarrhea, high blood pressure, and an increase in the liver enzyme AST on blood tests. Serious risks that warrant contacting a doctor include: • Diarrhea associated with Clostridium difficile, caused by changes in the normal bacteria in the bowel. Oracea must be stopped if this occurs. • Autoimmune syndromes, in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues. Stop Oracea immediately and contact a doctor if symptoms develop. • Increased pressure inside the skull (intracranial hypertension). Stop Oracea and contact a doctor if symptoms occur. • Drug buildup and possible liver injury in people with kidney impairment. • Increased sensitivity to sunlight. Minimize or avoid natural sunlight and artificial UV light, and contact a doctor if a reaction occurs. • Permanent tooth discoloration and temporary inhibition of bone growth when used during the second or third trimester of pregnancy, infancy, or childhood up to age 8. Contact a doctor if use occurs during these periods.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Oracea if you have had an allergic reaction to doxycycline or any other tetracycline. Use during the second or third trimester of pregnancy, infancy or childhood up to age 8 may cause permanent tooth discoloration and temporarily inhibit bone growth. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment. Tell your prescriber if you have kidney impairment, as doxycycline may accumulate in the body and cause liver injury. Minimize or avoid natural and artificial sunlight because Oracea can increase sensitivity to light. Oracea must be stopped if Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, symptoms of an autoimmune syndrome or symptoms of increased pressure around the brain occur. Contact your prescriber if these develop. Bacterial resistance to tetracyclines may develop, so Oracea should only be used as indicated.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take an anticoagulant (blood thinner), as they may need to reduce its dose. Oracea should not be used with penicillin because it may interfere with penicillin’s action. Use with methoxyflurane has been reported to cause fatal kidney toxicity.

Storage
