About Orencia

Overview

Orencia is a prescription medicine containing abatacept, supplied in a pre-filled syringe for injection under the skin. It treats moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis in adults, and moderately to severely active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis or active psoriatic arthritis in patients aged 2 years and older. It works by blocking a signal that immune cells called T cells need to become fully activated.

What it treats

- Moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis in adults. - Moderately to severely active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis in patients aged 2 years and older. - Active psoriatic arthritis in patients aged 2 years and older. - Prevention of acute graft-versus-host disease in patients aged 2 years and older undergoing a blood-forming stem cell transplant from a matched or one-allele-mismatched unrelated donor, used with a calcineurin inhibitor and methotrexate.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects reported in people with rheumatoid arthritis include headache, upper respiratory tract infections, inflammation of the nose and throat, and nausea. Serious infections and allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have occurred with Orencia. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop an infection or an allergic reaction. Seek immediate medical help for a severe allergic reaction. Orencia should be discontinued if a serious infection develops. People with recurrent infections or conditions that make infections more likely may be at greater risk. Using Orencia with a TNF antagonist increases the risk of infections, including serious infections. People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may have more frequent respiratory side effects.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for a severe allergic reaction. - Contact your doctor immediately if you develop a serious infection. - Get medical attention immediately for new or worsening breathing problems, especially if you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

The label lists no contraindications for Orencia (abatacept), but important precautions apply: • Serious infections can occur. Extra caution is needed if you have recurring infections or conditions that make infections more likely. Orencia should be stopped if a serious infection develops. • Using Orencia with a TNF antagonist can increase the risk of infections, including serious infections. • Screening for latent tuberculosis (TB) and viral hepatitis is needed before treatment. Patients who test positive for latent TB should receive treatment before starting Orencia. • Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have occurred. • Vaccinations should be updated before treatment. Live vaccines should not be given during treatment or for three months after stopping Orencia. Some vaccines may be less effective during treatment. • People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may have more frequent respiratory side effects. • Reactivation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) has been reported in patients receiving Orencia to prevent acute graft-versus-host disease.
