Gastrointestinal Risk

NSAIDs

1 cause an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. These events can occur at any time during use and without warning symptoms. Elderly patients are at greater risk for serious gastrointestinal events (see

Overview

Side effects

The most frequently reported side effects of Relafen (nabumetone) were diarrhea, indigestion and abdominal pain. Other common side effects include constipation, gas, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, dizziness, headache, tiredness, sleepiness, difficulty sleeping, increased sweating, nervousness, itching, rash, ringing in the ears and swelling from fluid retention. Contact a doctor promptly for serious side effects, including stomach or intestinal ulcers or bleeding, black stools, yellowing of the skin or eyes, liver problems including liver failure, kidney problems including kidney failure, unusual bleeding, vision changes or shortness of breath. Seek immediate medical help for a severe allergic reaction, including swelling of the face or throat or difficulty breathing, or a severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling. Serious skin reactions reported include Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for chest pain, trouble breathing or fainting. - Seek immediate medical attention for black, tarry stools or bleeding from the rectum. - Seek immediate medical attention for a blistering or peeling skin rash. - Seek immediate medical attention for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. - Seek immediate medical attention for yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Relafen (nabumetone) if you are allergic to nabumetone or any of the tablet’s ingredients, or if you have had asthma, hives or another allergic-type reaction after taking aspirin or another nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Severe allergic reactions, rarely fatal, have been reported in these patients. Relafen must not be used in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

Interactions

Nabumetone may interact with the following medicines: - ACE inhibitors: It may reduce their blood pressure-lowering effect. - Aspirin: Taking aspirin with nabumetone is generally not recommended because it may increase side effects. - Diuretics (water tablets), including furosemide and thiazides: Nabumetone may reduce their effect. Your doctor should monitor kidney function and how well the diuretic is working. - Lithium: NSAIDs can increase lithium levels in the blood. Close monitoring for lithium toxicity is needed when they are taken together. - Methotrexate: NSAIDs may increase methotrexate toxicity, so caution is needed. - Warfarin: Taking warfarin with nabumetone increases the risk of serious bleeding in the stomach or intestines compared with either medicine alone. Food or milk speeds absorption but does not change the total amount of the active metabolite in the blood. An aluminium-containing antacid had no significant effect on its availability.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
