Before taking this medicine

Do not take Risperdal if you have a known allergy to risperidone, paliperidone or any of its ingredients. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema (swelling), have been reported. Risperdal is not approved for dementia-related psychosis. Stroke and other cerebrovascular events have been reported in elderly patients with this condition. Tell your prescriber if you have diabetes or risk factors for diabetes, a history of seizures, conditions that increase seizure risk, a history of significantly low white blood cell counts, or a tendency to develop low blood pressure when standing. Blood sugar, weight and, in some patients, white blood cell counts need monitoring. Risperdal can also cause changes in blood fats and persistently raised prolactin levels. Other important risks include neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a serious reaction requiring immediate discontinuation and close monitoring, and tardive dyskinesia, an involuntary movement disorder. Risperdal may impair thinking and movement; use caution when operating machinery. Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant. Exposure during the third trimester may cause movement problems or withdrawal symptoms in the newborn.
