Safety information

Side effects

The most commonly reported side effects of carbidopa/levodopa tablets are nausea and uncontrolled movements, such as twitching, twisting or writhing. Other reported side effects include dizziness, sleepiness, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, dry mouth, headache, sleep problems and nightmares. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop hallucinations, confusion, unusual beliefs, new or worsening depression, compulsive gambling, increased sexual urges or other difficult-to-control urges. Uncontrolled movements that develop or worsen also need medical review. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, fainting, an irregular heartbeat, seizures, thoughts of suicide, gastrointestinal bleeding, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling or blistering skin. Sudden sleep episodes during everyday activities can occur and require prompt medical advice. Do not stop treatment suddenly or reduce it rapidly without your prescriber’s advice. This can cause very high fever and confusion. Other serious risks listed in the label include vitamin B6 deficiency, ulcers, glaucoma and blood cell disorders.

When to call your doctor

- Chest pain, an irregular heartbeat or fainting. - Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or difficulty breathing. - A high fever with confusion. - A seizure or convulsions. - Seeing or hearing things that are not there, or thoughts of suicide.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Interactions

Iron salts, including iron supplements, and dopamine D2 antagonists, including metoclopramide, may reduce the effectiveness of carbidopa and levodopa. Tell your doctor if you take any of these.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
