About Skyclarys
Overview
Skyclarys is a prescription medicine containing omaveloxolone, supplied as capsules. It is used to treat Friedreich’s ataxia in adults and adolescents aged 16 years and older. Its exact effect in treating Friedreich’s ataxia is not fully understood, but it activates a pathway called Nrf2, which helps cells respond to oxidative stress.

Side effects
Common side effects include raised liver enzymes, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, tiredness, diarrhea, and muscle or joint pain. Important risks that warrant contacting your doctor include raised liver enzymes, increased B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), and abnormal blood fat levels, including cholesterol. Contact your doctor if blood tests show these changes or if you develop signs of fluid overload. Ask your doctor which signs to watch for. Liver blood tests are needed before treatment, monthly for the first three months, and periodically afterward. Cholesterol should also be checked periodically during treatment.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
The supplied FDA label lists no contraindications for Skyclarys. However, treatment requires the following precautions: - Liver enzyme elevations: ALT, AST and total bilirubin should be checked before treatment, monthly for the first 3 months, and periodically thereafter. - Increased B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP): Patients should be advised about signs and symptoms of fluid overload. - Changes in blood lipids: Cholesterol should be monitored periodically during treatment. - Pregnancy: Based on animal data, Skyclarys may harm an unborn baby.
Interactions
Avoid taking Skyclarys with medicines that moderately or strongly block or increase the activity of the enzyme CYP3A4. Ask your doctor to check whether any of your medicines fall into these groups. If a medicine that blocks CYP3A4 cannot be avoided, your doctor may reduce your Skyclarys dose and monitor you.

Storage
