About Trimix
Overview
Trimix is a prescription medicine combining papaverine, phentolamine and prostaglandin E1 (alprostadil). It is used to treat erectile dysfunction. These ingredients relax smooth muscle and widen blood vessels in the penis, increasing blood flow to help produce an erection.

Side effects
Side effects can include penile pain or discomfort, bruising or minor bleeding at the injection site, headache, flushing and dizziness. Serious side effects include a prolonged erection (priapism), scarring or firm lumps in the penis, new penile curvature and a significant drop in blood pressure. Seek emergency medical care for an erection lasting 4 hours or longer, even if it is not painful, because it can cause permanent damage. Severe penile pain also needs urgent medical attention. Contact a doctor promptly for new lumps, curvature, persistent bleeding, severe dizziness or fainting. Seek emergency help for signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Before taking this medicine
Trimix should not be used by anyone allergic to papaverine, phentolamine, prostaglandin E1 (alprostadil), or any other ingredient in the preparation. It should not be used in people with conditions that increase the risk of a prolonged erection, such as sickle cell disease or trait, leukaemia or multiple myeloma. Other contraindications include penile implants, penile fibrosis or deformity, including Peyronie’s disease. It should not be used when sexual activity is medically inadvisable. Phentolamine is contraindicated in people with coronary artery disease, angina or a history of heart attack. The prescriber should assess anyone with low blood pressure, other heart or circulation problems, liver disease, a bleeding disorder, or treatment with blood-thinning medicines. Other erectile dysfunction treatments may increase the risk of prolonged erection or low blood pressure and should not be combined without specialist advice.
Interactions
Tell your prescriber about all medicines and supplements you take, especially: • Other erectile dysfunction medicines, such as sildenafil or tadalafil. Combining treatments may increase the risk of a prolonged erection or low blood pressure. Use them together only if your prescriber specifically directs you to. • Blood pressure medicines, including alpha blockers and nitrates, which may increase dizziness or fainting from low blood pressure. • Blood thinners or antiplatelet medicines, such as warfarin, aspirin or clopidogrel, which may increase bleeding or bruising. • Levodopa, as papaverine may reduce its effect. Also discuss alcohol use and any herbal or supplement products marketed for sexual performance. Alcohol may worsen dizziness or low blood pressure.
