About Trintellix

Overview

Trintellix contains vortioxetine, an antidepressant supplied as tablets taken by mouth. It is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. How it works is not fully understood, but it is thought to increase serotonin activity in the brain by slowing serotonin reuptake.

Side effects

Common side effects of Trintellix include nausea, constipation and vomiting. Contact a doctor promptly about serious side effects, including allergic reactions, worsening of your condition or suicidal thoughts, serotonin syndrome, increased bleeding, episodes of mania or hypomania, angle-closure glaucoma, or low blood sodium. Serotonin syndrome can occur with Trintellix alone, and the risk is higher when it is taken with other medicines that affect serotonin. Bleeding risk may increase with aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antiplatelet medicines, warfarin or other medicines that affect blood clotting. Trintellix may also cause sexual problems and symptoms when treatment is stopped. Discuss these with your doctor.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for suicidal thoughts or behavior, or worsening mental health. - Seek medical attention immediately for unusual bleeding.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Trintellix if you are allergic to vortioxetine or any of its ingredients. Severe allergic reactions, swelling and hives have been reported. Do not take Trintellix with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) used to treat psychiatric disorders, or within 14 days of stopping one. Do not start a psychiatric MAOI within 21 days of stopping Trintellix. Do not start Trintellix while receiving linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. These combinations increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Conditions and medicines requiring caution include: • Other medicines that increase serotonin: these increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, which can also occur with Trintellix alone. • Aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), other antiplatelet medicines, warfarin or other medicines that affect blood clotting: these may increase bleeding risk. • Bipolar disorder: screening is needed because mania or hypomania may occur. • Untreated narrow drainage angles in the eyes: antidepressants can trigger angle-closure glaucoma. • Low blood sodium: Trintellix can cause this, sometimes in association with inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). • Pregnancy: use in the third trimester may increase the risk of persistent high blood pressure in the newborn’s lungs and withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. Trintellix may also cause sexual dysfunction.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take medicines that strongly block the CYP2D6 enzyme (strong CYP2D6 inhibitors) or increase CYP enzyme activity (strong CYP inducers). Your prescriber may need to adjust your Trintellix dose when these medicines are used together.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
