FDA boxed warningCardiovascular death
Gout patients with established cardiovascular (CV) disease treated with ULORIC had a higher rate of CV death compared to those treated with allopurinol in a CV outcomes study.
Consider the risks and benefits of ULORIC when deciding to prescribe or continue patients on ULORIC. ULORIC should only be used in patients who have an inadequate response to a maximally titrated dose of allopurinol, who are intolerant to allopurinol, or for whom treatment with allopurinol is not advisable.
About Uloric
Overview
Uloric contains febuxostat and is used for the long-term management of high uric acid levels in adults with gout. It is intended for people whose uric acid levels are not adequately controlled with allopurinol, who cannot tolerate allopurinol, or for whom allopurinol is not advisable. It works by blocking an enzyme called xanthine oxidase, which lowers uric acid levels in the blood. Uloric is not recommended for high uric acid levels without symptoms.
What it treats
- Long-term management of high uric acid levels in adults with gout when allopurinol has not worked adequately despite dose adjustment, is not tolerated, or is not advisable. Not recommended for high uric acid levels without symptoms.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include abnormal liver function tests, nausea, joint pain and rash. Gout flare-ups frequently increase when Uloric is first started. Serious risks include death from cardiovascular causes, liver failure, which can be fatal, and severe skin or allergic reactions, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Contact a doctor promptly if liver injury or a serious skin or allergic reaction is suspected. Uloric should be stopped if a serious skin reaction is suspected, and treatment must be interrupted if liver injury is detected.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Uloric if you are being treated with azathioprine or mercaptopurine. Uloric requires caution in people with severe liver impairment because it has not been studied in this group. It is not recommended for people with secondary hyperuricemia, including those being treated for Lesch-Nyhan syndrome or cancer, or organ transplant recipients, because it has not been studied in these groups. Liver failure, including fatal cases, and serious skin or hypersensitivity reactions have been reported. Treatment should be interrupted promptly if liver injury is detected and stopped permanently if the injury is confirmed and no other cause is found. Stop Uloric if a serious skin reaction is suspected. Gout flares may increase when treatment starts. A flare alone does not mean Uloric needs to be stopped.
Interactions
Uloric (febuxostat) can increase blood levels of azathioprine or mercaptopurine, which may cause severe toxicity. Tell your doctor if you take either medicine before starting Uloric.

Storage
