About Vyalev
Overview
Vyalev contains foslevodopa and foscarbidopa and is supplied in a vial for infusion under the skin. It is used to treat motor fluctuations in adults with advanced Parkinson’s disease. In the body, its ingredients become levodopa, which is thought to work by turning into dopamine in the brain, and carbidopa, which helps more levodopa reach the brain.

Side effects
Common side effects include reactions and infections at the infusion or catheter site, hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there), and dyskinesia (uncontrolled movements). Contact a doctor if you develop sudden sleep episodes during everyday activities, excessive sleepiness, hallucinations or other psychotic symptoms, compulsive behaviours or difficult-to-control urges, signs of an infusion-site infection, or new or worsening uncontrolled movements. Other serious risks listed in the label include vitamin B6 deficiency and seizures, heart or blood vessel problems caused by reduced blood supply, and glaucoma. Do not stop Vyalev suddenly or reduce it rapidly without guidance from your prescriber. This can cause very high fever and confusion, which require urgent medical attention.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Vyalev if you are taking a nonselective monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor or have taken one within the past 2 weeks. Using these medicines together can cause high blood pressure. Vyalev may cause sudden sleep during everyday activities, hallucinations or psychosis, impulse-control problems, and new or worsening involuntary movements (dyskinesia). These effects may require your prescriber to review treatment. Infusion-site reactions and infections can occur. Use aseptic technique, rotate infusion sites frequently and monitor for signs of infection. Do not stop Vyalev suddenly or reduce it rapidly without your prescriber’s guidance, as this can cause withdrawal-related high fever and confusion. Vyalev may harm an unborn baby, based on animal studies; discuss treatment with your prescriber if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take any of the following medicines: - Selective MAO-B inhibitors: taking these with Vyalev may cause a drop in blood pressure when standing up. - Medicines for high blood pressure: taking these with Vyalev may cause a drop in blood pressure on standing that causes symptoms. Your doctor may need to adjust your blood pressure medicine. - Dopamine D2 receptor antagonists or isoniazid: these may reduce how well Vyalev works.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
