About Wakix

Overview

Wakix is a prescription tablet containing pitolisant. It is used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness or cataplexy in people aged 6 years and older with narcolepsy. Its exact way of working is unclear, but its effects may come from blocking the activity of histamine-3 (H3) receptors.

Side effects

Common side effects in adults include trouble sleeping, nausea and anxiety. In children aged 6 years and older, the most common side effects are headache and trouble sleeping. Wakix can prolong the QT interval, a change in the heart’s electrical activity that warrants medical attention. Contact your doctor if you have risk factors for QT prolongation or take other medicines that prolong the QT interval, as Wakix should be avoided in these situations. People with liver or kidney impairment need monitoring for increased QT prolongation.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Wakix if you are allergic to pitolisant or any of its ingredients, or if you have severe liver impairment. Anaphylaxis, a serious allergic reaction, has been reported. Wakix can prolong the QT interval, a change in the heart’s electrical activity. Avoid use if you have risk factors for QT prolongation or take other medicines that prolong the QT interval. If you have liver or kidney impairment, your prescriber should monitor you for QT prolongation.

Interactions

Strong CYP2D6 inhibitors can increase exposure to Wakix, while strong CYP3A4 inducers can decrease it. Tell your doctor about medicines you take so they can check for these interactions and decide whether your Wakix dose needs adjustment. Wakix may reduce the effectiveness of certain medicines processed by CYP3A4, including hormonal contraceptives. Use an alternative non-hormonal contraceptive method during treatment and for at least 21 days after stopping Wakix.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
