About Alphagan P
Overview
Alphagan P is an eye drop medicine containing brimonidine tartrate. It is used to lower elevated pressure inside the eye in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It works by reducing the amount of fluid the eye makes and helping fluid drain out of the eye.
What it treats
- Open-angle glaucoma with elevated eye pressure. - Ocular hypertension (elevated eye pressure).
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include eye allergy or allergic inflammation, burning, redness, itching, small bumps on the lining of the eye, dry mouth, changes in vision and high blood pressure. The label also warns that poor blood circulation may worsen and highlights concerns for people with severe heart or blood vessel disease. Contact your doctor if you have these conditions or notice worsening circulation problems. Contamination of the eye drops after use is another safety concern noted in the label.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Alphagan P in children younger than 2 years or in anyone with a known allergy to this medicine. Use with caution in children aged 2 years and older and in people with vascular insufficiency (poor blood flow), as it may worsen this condition.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take blood pressure medicines, cardiac glycosides, central nervous system depressants, tricyclic antidepressants or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Blood pressure medicines and cardiac glycosides may lower blood pressure. Central nervous system depressants may have additive or stronger effects when used together. MAOIs may increase blood pressure lowering. The label also notes that tricyclic antidepressants may reduce the blood-pressure-lowering effect of systemic clonidine.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C away from direct light. Once opened, follow the in-use period printed on the pack and do not let the dropper touch the eye or any surface. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
