About Alvesco
Overview
Alvesco contains ciclesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid used for ongoing asthma treatment in adults and children aged 12 years and older. After inhalation, ciclesonide is converted into an active substance that helps reduce inflammation in the airways. Alvesco does not relieve sudden asthma symptoms and is not indicated for children under 12.
What it treats
- Maintenance treatment of asthma in adults and children aged 12 years and older. - Not for relief of sudden airway narrowing (acute bronchospasm) or for children under 12 years.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include headache, nose and throat inflammation, sinusitis, throat pain, upper respiratory infections, joint pain, a blocked nose, pain in the arms or legs, and back pain. Contact your doctor if you develop a fungal infection in the mouth or throat (oral thrush), signs of an infection, or changes in vision. Alvesco can weaken the immune system and worsen existing infections. Chickenpox or measles can be serious or fatal in susceptible people. Rinse your mouth after inhalation to help reduce the risk of oral thrush. Other serious effects include excess corticosteroid effects, reduced adrenal gland function, reduced bone mineral density, slowed growth in children, glaucoma, increased eye pressure and cataracts. Discuss these risks with your doctor; children’s growth and certain eye problems require monitoring. Adrenal problems can also occur when switching from oral steroids to Alvesco, so any change in steroid treatment needs medical supervision.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Alvesco if you are allergic to ciclesonide or any of its ingredients. Allergic reactions may include swelling of the lips, tongue or throat. Alvesco must not be used as the main treatment for a severe or acute asthma attack requiring intensive treatment. Extra caution and monitoring are needed if you: • Have tuberculosis, a fungal, bacterial, viral or parasitic infection, or herpes simplex infection of the eye, as these may worsen. • Are susceptible to chickenpox or measles, which may become more serious or even fatal. • Are switching from oral steroids to Alvesco, because adrenal function may be impaired. Your prescriber should supervise this change. • Have a history of glaucoma, increased eye pressure or cataracts, or develop changes in vision. Alvesco can cause a fungal infection in the mouth or throat. Rinse your mouth after inhalation and have your mouth checked periodically. It may also cause excessive corticosteroid effects or suppress adrenal function, including during usual use in susceptible people. Children receiving Alvesco should have their growth monitored regularly.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take oral ketoconazole. When used with inhaled ciclesonide, it increased the body’s exposure to des-ciclesonide by about 3.6 times, while ciclesonide levels remained unchanged. In clinical studies, albuterol and formoterol did not affect how the body processed des-ciclesonide.
