About Androgel

Overview

Androgel is a prescription testosterone gel supplied in sachets. It is used to replace testosterone in adult men with low testosterone confirmed by symptoms and blood tests. It works by delivering testosterone through the skin to help replace the hormone the body is not making in sufficient amounts.

What it treats

Testosterone replacement therapy for adult men with hypogonadism, where testosterone deficiency is confirmed by symptoms and blood tests.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include skin redness or irritation where the gel is applied, acne, headache and mood changes. Breast tenderness or enlargement may also occur. Testosterone can increase red blood cell levels, which requires blood-test monitoring. Contact a doctor if you develop swelling of the ankles or legs, difficulty passing urine, worsening snoring or pauses in breathing during sleep, or frequent or persistent erections. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, painful swelling in one leg, sudden weakness or difficulty speaking. These may be signs of a blood clot, heart attack or stroke. A prolonged, painful erection or signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing, also require urgent care. Accidental transfer of the gel to another person can cause unwanted testosterone effects, especially in women and children. Contact a doctor if someone exposed develops unusual hair growth, acne, voice changes or changes in genital size.

When to call your doctor

• Chest pain, sudden shortness of breath or coughing up blood, seek emergency care. • Pain, swelling, warmth or redness in one leg, seek urgent medical attention. • Sudden weakness on one side, trouble speaking or sudden loss of vision, seek emergency care. • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing, seek emergency care. • A painful erection or one lasting more than four hours, seek emergency care.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Androgel if you have known or suspected prostate cancer, male breast cancer, or an allergy to testosterone or any other ingredient in the gel. It must not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding and is not intended for women or children. Tell your prescriber if you have heart, liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, diabetes, an enlarged prostate or difficulty passing urine. Extra caution is needed if you have a high red blood cell count, a history of blood clots or a condition that increases your risk of clotting. Testosterone can cause fluid retention and may worsen some of these conditions.

Interactions

Tell your doctor about all medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements you use. Testosterone may increase the effect of blood thinners such as warfarin, so closer blood-clotting monitoring may be needed. It can also affect blood sugar control and reduce insulin requirements; your doctor may need to review your diabetes treatment. Using testosterone with corticosteroids or adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) can increase fluid retention, particularly in people with heart, kidney or liver disease. Do not change or stop prescribed medicines without medical advice.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original sachet until you use it, away from direct light and moisture. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
