About Aricept

Overview

Aricept contains donepezil hydrochloride, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It is used to treat dementia associated with mild, moderate or severe Alzheimer’s disease. It is thought to work by reducing the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical involved in communication between nerve cells. There is no evidence that it changes the course of the underlying disease.

Side effects

Common side effects of Aricept include nausea, diarrhea, trouble sleeping, vomiting, muscle cramps, tiredness and loss of appetite. Serious risks include a slow heartbeat or heart block, stomach or intestinal ulcers and bleeding, difficulty passing urine and seizures. Contact a doctor if any of these occur or are suspected. Vomiting requires close monitoring, especially when treatment starts or the prescribed dose is increased. Aricept also requires particular caution in people with asthma or obstructive lung disease.

When to call your doctor

- Get medical help immediately for a very slow heartbeat. - Seek immediate medical attention for severe vomiting. - Get urgent medical help for bleeding from your stomach or intestines. - Seek immediate medical attention if you cannot pass urine. - Get emergency medical help for a seizure or convulsions.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Aricept if you have a known allergy to donepezil hydrochloride or piperidine derivatives. Conditions requiring caution include slow heart rate or heart block, an increased risk of stomach or intestinal ulcers or bleeding, difficulty emptying the bladder, seizures, asthma or obstructive lung disease. Aricept may slow the heartbeat or cause heart block. Patients should be monitored for stomach or intestinal bleeding, which may not be visible. Aricept can cause vomiting, so close observation is needed when treatment starts and after dose increases. If you are having anesthesia, tell the anesthesia team that you take Aricept, as it may increase the effects of certain muscle relaxants. During pregnancy, Aricept may harm the unborn baby based on animal studies.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take anticholinergic medicines, as Aricept may interfere with their effects. Aricept may also increase the effects of cholinergic agonists, succinylcholine or similar medicines that block nerve signals to muscles. If you are having a procedure involving these medicines, make sure the treating doctor knows you take Aricept.

Storage
