About Exelon

Overview

Exelon Patch contains rivastigmine, a cholinesterase inhibitor delivered through the skin. It is used to treat mild, moderate and severe Alzheimer’s dementia, and mild-to-moderate dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease. It is thought to work by slowing the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical involved in communication between nerve cells. There is no evidence that it changes the course of the underlying dementia.

What it treats

Exelon Patch is used to treat: • Mild, moderate or severe dementia of the Alzheimer’s type. • Mild-to-moderate dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease.

Side effects

Common side effects of Exelon patches include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Reduced appetite, weight loss and skin reactions where the patch is applied can also occur. Contact a doctor if nausea, vomiting or diarrhea is severe or persistent, or if you develop reduced appetite or weight loss. Prolonged vomiting or diarrhea can cause dehydration with serious consequences, and treatment may need to be interrupted. Stop treatment and contact a doctor if a skin reaction spreads beyond the patch area, becomes more intense, with increasing redness, swelling, bumps or blisters, and does not significantly improve within 48 hours after removing the patch. Applying multiple patches at the same time has led to hospitalization and, rarely, death. Seek urgent medical help if multiple patches have been applied at once.

When to call your doctor

- Severe nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, especially prolonged vomiting or diarrhea that may cause dehydration. - Significant loss of appetite or weight loss. - A skin reaction that spreads beyond the patch area, becomes increasingly red, swollen, bumpy or blistered, and does not clearly improve within 48 hours after patch removal.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Exelon Patch if you are allergic to rivastigmine, other carbamate derivatives, or any ingredient in the patch, or if you have previously had a rivastigmine patch-site reaction suggesting allergic contact dermatitis. Important precautions with Exelon Patch: • Applying multiple patches at the same time has caused hospitalisation and, rarely, death. Patients and caregivers must receive instructions on correct use. • Significant nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite and weight loss may occur and may require treatment to be interrupted. Prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration with serious consequences. • Stop treatment if a patch-site reaction spreads beyond the patch area, becomes more intense, for example, with increasing redness, swelling, bumps or blisters, and does not significantly improve within 48 hours after removing the patch. Widespread skin reactions have also been reported.

Interactions

Using Exelon with metoclopramide, beta-blockers, cholinomimetic medicines or anticholinergic medicines is not recommended. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines.

Storage

Store below 25°C flat in the original sealed sachet, away from direct light and heat, until you are ready to apply it. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
